제 20 호 An Undergraduate Student Participated as the First Author in an International Academic Journal Registered on SCI

Kicker: SM NEWS (EVENT) An Undergraduate Student, 3rd grade in the Department of Green Chemical Engineering, Participated as the First Author in an International Academic Journal Registered on SCI By Seo-Won Hong, Reporter eunoia1025@naver.com A paper “A Facile Method to Fabricate an Enclosed Paper-Based Analytical Device via Double-Sided Patterning for Ionic Contaminant Detection” by a research team of Kang Sung-min professor of the Department of Green Chemical Engineering at Sangmyung University (SMU) was published in the SCI International Academic Journal (Biosensors, IF:5.400). Lee Eun-ho, 3rd grade in Sangmyung University’s Department of Green Chemical Engineering participated as the first author in the paper. In this article, I will take a closer look at the paper written by a research team of Sangmyung University. Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPAD) which are conventional devices and an open-channel system have limitations for application as analytical platforms because of the evaporation and contamination of the sample solution. Professor Kang Sung-min’s research team demonstrates the design and fabrication of an enclosed three-dimensional(3D)-μPAD. This study has also presented the application as a primary early analysis platform. Through this study, heavy metal ions such as copper (Cu2+), nickel (Ni2+), and mercury (Hg2+), which lead the contamination of water, as well as radioactive cesium-137 ions (Cs+) can be detected though color changes simultaneously. An Enclosed three-dimensional(3D)-μPAD could be used as primary early detection sensors for water pollution enabling multiple analyses of unknown samples, it is expected to contribute to the development of environmental monitoring and biosensors field. The research was conducted by the collaborative research team of Professor Kang Sung-min from the Department of Green Chemical Engineering at Sangmyung University and Professor Jeong Heon-ho from the Department of Chemical and Engineering at Chonnam National University. Kicker: SM NEWS 2023 Winter English Language Program by Si-ho Park, Reporter pnshse05@naver.com In January next year, Sangmyung University students who are joining the winter language program will go to the University of Missouri-Kansas City in the U.S., Simon Fraser University in Canada, and the University of Adelaide in Australia for four to five weeks. I’d like to walk you through the details of the 2023 winter language program. Let’s look into specific information such as credit acceptance, application eligibility, scholarship, and selection criteria, as well as vivid reviews! https://www.sfu.ca/elc.html Guide to the Winter Language Programs The University of Missouri-Kansas City in the U.S. program will run for four weeks from January 2 to 31, 2024, Simon Fraser University in Canada will run for four weeks from January 2 to 26, 2024, and the University of Adelaide in Australia will run for five weeks from January 2 to February 2, 2024, with 15 students for each school. In the case of Australia and Canada, there were many applicants, so five more students were selected than the initial recruitment. Program participants will get 3 credits, and students who have previously participated in the language training before also can get the credits within a cumulative range of 12 credits. In the case of scholarships, it will be given if the participant passes the language training course and submits all the documents required. Scholarships will be paid up to 3,000,000 won. The English Language and Culture Program at Simon Fraser University in Canada is located in downtown Vancouver. With fully certified instructors, participants will build their communication skills, experience Canadian culture, and truly live the language. The English Language Centre at the University of Adelaide in Australia offers a range of General and Academic English language programs, along with short courses for international students and visiting groups. Vivid Reviews of the Previous Participants Hyunjin Jang, who has been to Simon Fraser University, gave us practical advice. She said that the transportation there was very convenient since Vancouver is a popular place in Canada. She also recommended taking the bus after school, saying that there are so many beaches nearby. Minseo Kang, who has been to the University of Adelaide, said that life in Australia was such a happy time that her worries were overshadowed, and she could also learn a lot and expand her perspective on the world through the program. And the conclusion of the Korea-German Employment Agreement also celebrated its 60th anniversary. In commemoration of this, the German-speaking Regional Studies major at the Global Humanities College of Sangmyung University and the Korean & German Teachers Council jointly hosted the commemorative event, “140+ in Cheonan (140 jahre deutch-koreanische beziehungen)”, that was co-directed by Sangmyung University and Dankook University. "140+ in Cheonan" is an event that discusses ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, with the theme of "Steps for the Future of Korea and Germany in Cheonan," and aims to promote and pursue mutual development. This event, which took the form of explanation and discussion, was held on November 2nd at the Sangmyung University Academic Information Center, Room 404. Then, the event was organized in four parts, showing various topics such as industry, culture, and education in Korea and Germany. The first part of the program focused on industrial talent and midsize companies, explaining the challenges of Korean midsize companies in the next 10 years and soft skills that will give a competitive advantage for future talent. The second part of the program offered a glimpse into German culture with the play <Schneewittchen> by Dankook University students and the choir performance <Hänschen klein/Lieblingsmensch> by Sangmyung University students. After the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Korea and the United States was signed, Germany also tried to establish diplomatic relations with us using this opportunity, and eventually, the Germany-Korea Treaty was signed on November 26, 1883, with the efforts of von Brandt, Paul Georg von Müllendorf, and Edward Jobpe, the German Consul General in Yokohama.Through the intermediary of the Catholic Church, Koreans were sent to Germany as nurses and miners, and over time, the economic cooperation between the two countries became closer, with the signing of the Korea-Germany Miners' Agreement and the Korea-Germany Cultural Agreement in 1970. On April 4, the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Germany was held in Signiel Seoul, "Economy has always been an important foundation of German-Korean bilateral relations," said Reiffenstuel, adding that he hopes to expand in cooperation in areas ranging from science and research to culture, and etc. He urged Germany and Korea to embrace the opportunities provided by innovations in energy storage, smart grids, renewable energy, zero-emission vehicles, eco-friendly, and energy-efficient buildings that lead the development of new industries. Kicker: SM NEWS Reorganization of Relative Evaluation Rating Ratio By Jun-Seo Park, Reporter from23juns@naver.com From the first semester of 2023, the ratio of relative evaluation grades was reorganized when giving credits in our university. Before the reorganization, it was operated so that students could receive each grade A, B, and C at a rate of 30%, 40%, and 30% of all students. However, after the reorganization, up to 45% of the total students could receive credits equivalent to A+ and A, and credits equivalent to B+ or less could be given by discretion of the professor. The background of the reorganization as mentioned above was explained by the Academic Affairs Office of this school as follows: “Given that the ratio of receiving A credits from Sangmyung University is currently lower than that of other universities, the school's Academic Affairs Office intends to ease the criteria for benefits under the judgment that it may be difficult for students to secure competitiveness in the job market in the future.” https://www.jamesgmartin.center/2020/07/if-all-men-are-created-equal-why-do-we-need-grades/ Arguments for Approval The opinion in favor is argued as follows. It is possible to increase credit competitiveness in the job market compared to other universities and to reduce academic burdens and prevent overheating of competition by easing standards. It also provides an opportunity for students to participate in extracurricular activities by alleviating fatigue with credits. Arguments for Disapproval The opposing position argues as follows. If the evaluation criteria are eased, the screening criteria may become ambiguous as the ratio of high ranked students expands, reducing discrimination and increasing the number of recipients of academic scholarships. In addition, individual students' understanding of their major may decrease, and the number of people who do not achieve academic achievement may increase. I think that both the pros and cons have reasonable reasons. However, I think it is too much that the ratio of credits corresponding to A and A+ is 45%. It is good to increase students' credit competitiveness in the job market, but if the ratio of A and A+ is too high, students may lose motivation for their studies. In particular, what is more important in recent years is practical abilities rather than credits themselves, so I think it is important for students to voluntarily improve their understanding of their major. Anyway, the reorganization is definitive, so even if there is something that you don't like, it would be desirable to find ways to improve your abilities and do well in school accordingly. The protagonist, Dr. Thomas Stockmann, discovers that the town's hot springs are polluted and insists on exposing the truth and taking social responsibility. However, the dominant figures in the town, along with the media and citizens, criticize Stockmann for making claims that go against their interests. Ultimately, Stockmann is branded as an enemy of the people and faces public condemnation in his quest to reveal the truth. Through El folkefiende, Ibsen portrays the clash of values between the majority and the minority, illustrating the resistance of the minority seeking truth against the blind majority driven by self-interest. The play highlights the importance of respecting the opinions of the minority, especially when the majority's judgment is not necessarily correct or competent. Professor Lim Hyeong-Jin, the project advisor, also stated that “El folkefiendeis a work by Ibsen that reflects a rebellious perspective on 19th-century society, encouraging serious contemplation on the contradictory relationship between power and truth commonly witnessed today between groups and individuals.” I contribute this article to commemorate the very moment in which such a socially meaningful play as El folkefiende was proudly produced by students of Sangmyung University and appreciate them for brightly showcasing our artistic eminence on the grand stage of the Korean theater scene.

Kicker: SM NEWS (EVENT) A Paper by Undergraduate Students Majoring in Cultural and Art Management was Published in an International Academic Journal Registered on KCI By Seo-Won Hong, Reporter eunoia1025@naver.com Undergraduate students at Sangmyung University’s Department of Cultural and Art Management conducted research with advisor professor Kim Hyun-su about global fandom communication platform Weverse of HYBE, and published a paper in an international academic journal registered on KCI. In this article, I will take a closer look at the paper written by undergraduate students wtih their advisor professor. Also, I will introduce more about the Department of Cultural and Art Management. Co-author of the paper (Prof. Kim Hyun-su, Undergraduate students Kim Da-Yeon and Kwak Nam-mi) (SMU) A paper “A study on Entertainment Platform Service Evaluation Using IPA (Importance-Performance Analaysis : Focusing on Weverse” written by Professor Kim Hyun-su and undergraduate students Kwak Nam-mi and Kim Da-Yeon as co-authors, was published in the Journal of the Korea Entertainment Industry Association (JKEIA) (Vol. 16, No. 7). According to the paper, after prior research, undergraduate students conducted in-depth interviews and surveyed Weverse users. The paper analyzed the importance and satisfaction of each function of platform service and diagnosed the current status and problems of Weverse. In particular, the paper presented the priority of introducing new services and suggested future directions. Kim Da-Yeon, 3rd grade majoring in Cultural and Art Management said “We had many meetings to collect and analyze data for research with our advisor professor during more than six months, so we are able to achieve good results.” Kwak Nam-mi, 4th grade majoring in Cultural Management and Art said “I would like to thank Professor Kim Hyun-su for guiding me to complete our paper, and I want to continue research in the entertainment field after graduation.” Kim Hyun-su, an advisor professor of the Department of Cultural and Art Management, said “It is uncommon for an undergraduate student majoring in arts to publish a paper in a prestigious journal.” She also said, “We were able to achieve good results because the students have much interest in the entertainment business, and they put immense efforts to solve problems arising in the entertainment business field.” Sangmyung University’s Department of Cultural and Art Management aims to produce future culture and arts CEOs, who will lead the Korean art world in the era of culture and become a center of cultivating future cultural arts planners. Kicker: SM NEWS Sangmyung University Overseas Educational Volunteer Programs in Laos By Yun-Seo Jung, Reporter yysj1230@naver.com From June 24th to 30th, the Sangmyung University Global Volunteer Corps visited Laos to provide educational services. This is related to the '2023 University International Development Cooperation Understanding Promotion Project' supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency, KOICA. This is a project to cultivate human resources who can participate in international development cooperation projects in the future, focusing on raising global citizenship and understanding poverty, health, economy, environment, and gender equality in the international community among university students. Sangmyung University's International Development Evaluation Center has been selected for the ninth year for the '2023 University International Development Cooperation Understanding Promotion Project' organized by KOICA. Making a Lotus Flower of the Educational Volunteer Program This educational volunteer activity, which visited overseas in person, was resumed for the first time in four years due to the influence of COVID-19. Previously, they visited countries such as Laos, Vietnam, the Philippines, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Rwanda, and Tanzania, and in 2020, they conducted an Understanding Promotion Project through online open lectures due to COVID-19. The Sangmyung University volunteer group, consisting of 10 students and 4 leaders, visited Ban Chan Nou Primary School in Luang Prabang, Laos. While there, the volunteers worked with about 60 elementary school students on hygiene education using clay soap, and provided educational services such as making a lotus flower, origami, drawing fan, and world map drawing. Then they executed group work to paint a school building. They also visited the Ecole des Beaux-Arts Luangprabang, a traditional crafts school that has been in constant contact with Sangmyung University. While there, they provided marketing support by helping to create a brochure for the school. The students who participated in this overseas volunteer work were selected from among the students of "International Development Cooperation and Technology & Design," a course offered at Sangmyung University in the first semester of the 2023 as part of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Understanding Promotion Project. Baek Sun-wook, head of the International Development Evaluation Center at Sangmyung University (Professor of Software Department), said, "I hope this overseas volunteer activity will help to revitalize international development cooperation projects in Laos." In addition, he said, "We plan to continue overseas volunteer activities for students in the International Development Cooperation and Technology & Design course to expand our understanding of international cooperation and global citizenship." Kicker: SM NEWS Welcome to SMU House! by Si-ho Park, Reporter pnshse05@naver.com From August 31st to September 2nd, SMU House students are entering the dormitory for the second semester of 2023. SMU House is a dormitory for the students of Sangmyung University Seoul Campus, located in Pyeongchang-dong, which opened in March 2013. I will share the dormitory information and living tips for new students of SMU House. What is SMU House? The SMU House, a student dormitory of Sangmyung University Seoul Campus in Pyeongchang-dong, provides various types of rooms such as double rooms, triple rooms, quadruple rooms, six rooms, and eight rooms. In the SMU House, there is a computer room, a restroom, a studying room, a laundry room, and a shower room. As for the selection criteria, students in the second and fourth grades are selected in the order of the total score of the average credit for the previous semester and the commuting distance. In the case of freshmen, they are selected in the order of the total score of admission and commuting distance. Tips for Living at SMU House First, you can enter or exit the dormitory entrance and each floor using the card key that you receive in the administrative office when you enter SMU House. The first basement floor of the building is the lobby, the first and second floors are used by male students, and the third and fourth floors are used by female students. The administrative office on the first basement floor keeps packages and is in charge of other administrative tasks. Second, the roll call is held from Monday to Thursday at 12 a.m. They check every single one, so please keep that in mind! You can apply for an extension to 1 o'clock. You can apply for a night out or an extension freely, but if you apply, it will be noted to your parents. Third, there are public restrooms on each floor. There is a microwave, and you can also eat while watching TV. When using the shared refrigerator, please write down the room number and your name. Fourth, there are also laundry rooms on each floor. Laundry cards can be issued and charged on B1F. Both the washing machine and the dryer can be used for 1,000 won at a time. It's good to bring your own drying rack. Celebrating the second semester, I conducted an interview with Professor Francis Brennen of the General Education Department in order to help you with your English-related concerns. Let's take a peak at the interview! 1. Hello, it is a great honor to have an interview with you. Before we start, please introduce yourself briefly! Hello. My name is Francis Brannen and I’ve been working at Sangmyung University for over ten years under the Department of General Education. 2. I know that you have been teaching students at Sangmyung University for a long time. Based on your experience, what was the most difficult part for the students in learning English during the class? During class? Hmm.. This could vary per student, but I believe one of the most difficult parts is having the students speak up in English in front of their classmates. It can be incredibly uncomfortable for students to speak in front of an audience, even within their own peers. But to speak up in English can be very stressful. Most students are used to lecture-style courses, but to speak up with all eyes in the classroom on that student can be traumatizing. 3. Even though Korean students have gone through at least 9 years of regular English education, there are not that many students who speak English fluently, which is a big irony. Why do you think that is? This could be related to students being prepared for the College Entrance Exam where they must master skills such as reading, vocabulary and grammar. Speaking skills seem to take a backseat when it comes to English education especially in high school. However, the speaking abilities of our students seem to increase each year. This has been very noticeable during my time here at SMU. Each year the new incoming students seem to have increased abilities in speaking. 4. In addition to transforming the current education system, what attitudes should students take on an individual level to help solve this fundamental problem? A major problem is the process of entering university via the College Entrance Exam. Now that are students are over this hurdle and now an official college student, students should have the attitude of taking on their desired dreams and life goals. There will always be pushes to change the name of departments, to create or remove certain majors, to redesign curriculums which are meant to be effective for the future of our students, but students must focus on their goals and wishes. Students should follow the plan that they feel is right for them. Study what interests them and what they believe in. Choosing a path that relates to the students’interest and goals could be a way to help solve some of the problems our students face in the current education system. 5. Can you introduce some English Liberal Arts classes or studying materials that students would find useful? Unfortunately, the number of English Liberal Arts classes have been reduced over the past few semesters. Withing those offered, I’d recommend English Enrichment: Speaking. Also, if students are interested in taking an online course, the other available course is English Enrichment: Enrichment English through Cultural Understanding. These would be the two English Liberal Arts courses available for our students at the moment. As for study materials… hmm.. It depends on the specifics of what the student wishes to study (grammar, vocabulary, writing or speaking). There are a great number of sites students can use to help them study English. Sites such as Prepfly, British Council, Duolingo, and TED provide good materials for students who wish to study or improve their English. However, some are paid services. 6. Lastly, if there is anything you would like to say to the students of Sangmyung University, please. Please enjoy your time in college. Make the most of your time in university. Join school clubs, study and or travel abroad, participate in school programs, experience an internship, volunteer, have a mentor or be a mentor. This list could keep going, but college is just a short few years of your life, but make it a memorable and worthwhile experience. Good luck to you all this Fall Semester!
