Collaborative Learning Park (CLP) in T Building on Seoul Campus CLP is a new place to study, built in 2019. It is equipped with computers and board markers as a place for collaborative learning such as group activities. In particular, it is attractive to have meetings in groups by connecting students' laptops with large computers. This place needs to be certified using the Sangmyung University app when you want to book in advance. 2. Library of Academic Intelligence Building at Cheonan Campus It is a library with books in various fields. Especially, it has a group study room and presentation room as well as a place for one person to study. Students at Sangmyung University can also use the study places after booking. In particular, unlike other study rooms on the first basement floor, projectors are available, making it easier to do group projects. 3. Jahamaruin in the L building on Seoul Campus Jahamaru is located on the roof of the library. It is a nature friendly place because it is outdoors. This space allows not only group activities but also outdoor exhibitions and small-scale performances. Jahamaru can be used comfortably without a separate reservation. Lounge in Songbaek Hall at Cheonan Campus (1F) On the first floor of the Songbaek Hall, there is a student lounge consisting of an open study room. It is convenient for group activities and tasks because it has concentric plugs and computers. In addition, photocopiers are also available, making it possible to print your work right away. 5. Reading Lounge in the L building on the Seoul Campus There are various types of learning spaces in one space, including a single desk and stand, a desk seating multiple people, a desk with a computer, and a desk with a comfortable chair. If you go further back into the past, it really was an old fashioned newspaper. Coming back to 2019, the SM Herald has published online newspapers for nearly a year from the March 2019 edition up until the December 2019 edition. Thanks to all of our readers, there are even articles that have reached thousands of views! Therefore, in order to wrap up and reflect on the past SM Heralds articles, we are planning to listen to the opinions of readers and reporters in this edition’s cover story. Let’s take a look at Professor Samuel Alexander Denny’s interview first. Interview With Faculty Adviser, Professor Samuel Alexander Denny: Question 1: How is the online newspaper version of the SM Herald? What is better (than the magazine type)? What differences are worth noting? Answer 1: I am happy and satisfied with it. I had encouraged our Herald members to make an online version for a very long time. The reason is, most university age students get information online. They like to access information on their phone, right? Therefore I thought few among the millennial generation read hard copy newspapers anymore, and I wanted our SM Herald to be up-to-date. I guess because of this change, more students are reading it now. The second reason I like the new SM Herald is that it is environmentally conscious. If there were remaining copies of the old (hard cover version) Herald, we had to just throw them away. Even if we could recycle them, I thought it was very wasteful and unnecessary. Now we are not using any natural resources, so I think it is more environmentally friendly to publish it online/digitally. This decision was correct. Question 2: What do you miss? Answer 2: You can see in my office, I have all the copies of the old Herald. I still miss paper magazines that I can touch. I am an older generation, so I like that (paper version). There were more photographs in the hard version than the online copy. I keep these (old copies), and for me each one is a nice memory. I know a lot of effort went into producing each of them, so I am kind of very nostalgic about the paper copies. I’m also very realistic about today’s world. I realize that young people want to access news in a fresh way, and we just had to meet our readers where they are. Question 3: What kind of articles do you want the SM Herald to write in the future? Do the articles seem to be helpful/motivating and meaningful for the readers? Answer 3: I think they are helpful. However, I would like to see more direct interviews where our Herald reporters go and talk to our Sangmyung students. I know in this issue there is going to be an article and interview with the president of SEDA (English Discussion Club), and I think that is great. I do think the articles are very interesting. I think articles that are related to students’ health are great because students are very health-conscious about their diet, getting enough sleep/exercise, all of these things that are related to the real lives of our students. I think we have done those kinds of stories but we need more articles like that. The SM Herald will keep working on trying to be a better school media source for SMU students. To improve readability, we are conducting experiments, fixing manuals and are receiving check-ups. We are also constantly checking ourselves through constant and steady-going idea/review meetings. Let’s now take a look at a check-up helped by you, our fellow readers. The following are the opinions of students from Sangmyung Univ who participated in the questionnaire for the development of the SM Herald. Question 1:Do you know that an English newspaper of Sangmyung Univ. has changed its publication method to online news? Question 1-(1):If so, what route did you know it through? Question 2:Do you think the Internet newspaper format is better than paper magazines? Question 2-(1):Why is the Internet article format better than the paper magazine format? Question 2-(2): What is the reason you prefer the paper magazine format? Question 3:Do you still feel uncomfortable or inconvenienced reading an English newspaper after transforming to an Internet newspaper? Question 4:Please comment from the reader's perspective about how to provide improvement of access to an Internet English newspaper. One of the most common opinions is to request active public relations. Students suggested publicity using “Everytime”, “Instagram”, “Kakao + (Plus) Friend (Channel)”, etc. The SM Herald currently has all of the above publicity accounts. However, it is clean that the problem is that SM Herald has not used it frequently enough for students to recognize sufficient access and the cooperation with the main media of Sangmyung Univ has been rare. Thus, students also proposed cooperation with the Student Council and campus websites. If the Univ. allows to pop up publicity, expose SM Herald's icons and banners on the school homepage, or cooperate with the Student Council, access would be very high. In fact, those above methods have been tried, and in addition to the efforts of the SM Herald reporters, it was answered that it would be difficult to achieve without the permission and cooperation of the university. Based on the results of your questionnaire received this time, we will be able to improve access through a flexible compromise, though. In addition, many advertisements were emphasized via text messages, and many various and different events were requested. Furthermore, specifically, one participant requested events to answer questions from official language(English) exams. Accordingly, these opinions will be integrated and considered to organize educational events that are simple, interesting, or practically useful to students. We also confirmed the importance of not only SNS, text messages, online media, but also offline promotional materials. Placing posters designed with emphasis on the QR code of the Webzine homepage and SNS account of the SM Herald, at noticeable locations such as school stations, main boards, and former English newspaper stands, is an example. A method was also presented to provide and hold regular prize giveaway events for those who followed the English newspaper. On the other hand, in terms of the content of newspaper articles, students asked us for interesting article themes. Suggestions were made on how to make readers focus on the content of newspaper articles, such as including English information useful for employment, common sense, and quizzes for events in newspaper articles. In addition, increasing the interval between sentences, ensuring readability, and adding highlights and memo functions on the web magazine homepage were also proposed as a way to solve the shortcomings of an Internet publication compared to a paper newspaper. This method has a problem in that there is a limit that requires cooperation with an outside Internet homepage development company. Adapting to new social changes, we will continue to develop your online SM Herald, which has transformed into a new form. Thank you very much for your support and cooperation.

Probably, lots of students are interested in having a fruitful college life. Therefore, we are going to let you know convenience and education systems at Sangmyung University for our students’ worthwhile campus life. Especially, we are going to handle practical mobile applications and vacation programs which have been implemented in SMU ▲ A College life Practical Mobile Applications for SMU Students SM Herald would like to recommend practical mobile applications for SMU students. Let’s take a look at what applications are here. Some applications may be familiar to you. All of these applications were recommended by Sangmyung University students. I hope these applications are helpful to you, too. ▲ The mobile application ‘Everytime’ 1.‘Everytime’ ‘Everytime’ is the most popular application for college students. Many students recommended ‘Everytime’, too. SM Herald also uses ‘Everytime’ to communicate with SMU students. There are three reasons for this recommendation. First, the community is active so users can get school news and other information quickly. Second, it is convenient to make your timetable and check your schedule by ‘wizet.’ Third, users can communicate with anonymity. ▲ The mobile application ‘Coursemos’ 2. ‘Coursemos’ It has been only two to three years since the app was used at our university. However, now, most students are using ‘Coursemos.’ There are two reasons for this recommendation. First, ‘Coursemos’ is a useful app for viewing lecture materials and lecture notices. In particular, when new lectures or notices are uploaded, an alarm service lets us know the information. Therefore, we can get information quickly.Second, users can listen to video lectures through the application. It is very useful for students attending on-line classes. ▲ The mobile application ‘Polaris Office’ 3. ‘Polaris Office’ (A document editing mobile application) There are three reasons for this recommendation. First, ‘Polaris Office’ application is composed of ‘Word’, ’Excel’, ‘PowerPoint’ and ‘Hangul and Computer.’ Therefore, users don’t have to download each application. Second, college students can edit documents by a mobile phone. It allows students to write documents everywhere. Third, ‘Polaris Office’ is especially useful to iPhone users. Originally, iPhone users can’t view or edit ‘Hangul and Computer’ files and it caused them lots of problems. School programs can be divided into three main categories. Volunteer activities, overseas training programs, and employment/career programs. Before starting the article, I would like to explain the terms that SMU students are confused about. There are language training, exchange students, international exchanges, and on-the-job training. ▶An Explanation of Confusing Terms Usually, international exchange programs include language training or exchange student programs. Then, what is the difference between language training and exchange students? Exchange students are programs organized by universities, so they can study with scholarships. Therefore, the competition rate is high, and the applicant usually is selected based on grades and language skills. Exchange students can also receive more than a certain credit. On the contrary, language training is not a program organized by the school, so you cannot get a scholarship. Therefore, the competition rate is low and language training is much more free than the exchange student. An on-the-job training is easy to think of as an internship experience abroad. Internships are so essential to experience that they are included in the graduation requirements in some specific departments. If a student in such a specific department is thinking about overseas employment, it is advisable to apply for on-the-job training. (The volunteer work will be explained on each campus.) ▶Overseas Training First, it is the overseas training section. There are so many countries that you can go to for overseas training. Typically, there are the United States, China, Russia, Germany, Australia, Japan and Taiwan. Overseas training programs are usually posted on the website or are directly informed by the departments. ▶Employment/Career Programs Cheonan campus and Seoul campus jointly support certification-related programs. These programs are available at Sangmyung University’s Employment Support Team. Certifications include Computer Utilization level 2, Excel, Illustration, Accounting level 1, and ICDL COMPUTING(python). The certification process is conducted during the semester, and some are conducted during the vacation. ▲ The Homepage of Employment Support Team Furthermore, both Cheonan and Seoul campuses support on-the-job training programs. It is often called an internship program. As described above, if you are considering overseas employment, it is good to have a job experience once through an on-the-job program that is supported by the school. In the first half of 2019, on-the-job training programs were in the US, China, Australia and Germany. The period is divided into one month during vacation, six months, and one year, and the cost varies depending on the period of staying in the country. The school supports scholarships, but the qualification for the scholarship is in the third grade and the fourth grade in not applicable. The company is assigned according to your major. Therefore, it is not necessary to worry about whether or not you are wasting time doing the work which is not suitable for the major. An on-the-job training information session is also held every semester, so it is good for interested students to refer to the briefing session. Vacation Programs at the Seoul Campus Vacation programs at the Seoul Campus can be categorized in to three parts: volunteer work, overseas training, and employment programs. There are many good programs for vacation, if you pay attention. ▶Volunteer work ▲ Volunteers who participated in ‘Sharing Kim chi of Love’ ‘Sharing Kim chi of Love’ The program opens at every December. ‘Sharing Kim chi of Love’ is a project which delivers Kimjang and sponsorship for the underprivileged in Buam-doing, Jongno-gu. If you apply for ‘Social Corps’, you can attend to ‘Sharing Kim chi of Love’ volunteer work. You can apply for it any time. ‘The Global Overseas Volunteer Activity’ The program is held during every winter vacation. ‘The Global Overseas Volunteer Activity’ takes about 14 days to complete. There was the Laos Overseas Volunteer Activity in 2018. However, there is no announcement for the 2019 Global Overseas Volunteer Activity yet. If you want to apply for ‘Global Overseas Volunteer Activity’, you have to complete some documents. ▶Overseas Training The program is held during every summer/winter vacation. There are lots of countries which are cooperating with Sangmyung University. Most of the Overseas Trainings have been implemented at the Cheonan Campus, too. First, it is the ‘SM Convertion Camp.’ The program opens during summer vacation. It is an overnight program. SM Convertion Camp is a job support camp for getting a job at small and medium-sized enterprises. Second, it is the ‘NCS Vocational Basic ability Program.’ The program opens during summer vacation. The program which analyzes previous NCS tests and prepare for NCS recruitment. Third, it is the ‘Viral Marketing certificate process.’The program opens during winter vacation. The program is a specialized education program concerning understanding marketing techniques and practice. Fourth, it is the ‘Field practice program.’ The program opens during winter vacation. The practice time should be over 40 hours. Plus, you can participate in the first semester of the third grade.
